Some of the most capable, curious, and creative youth we work with are also the ones struggling the most behind the scenes.
They are bright, insightful, and deep thinkers. Yet at the same time, they may feel overwhelmed, inconsistent, emotionally exhausted, or stuck. From the outside, this can be hard to understand. Their strengths are obvious, but their challenges are often hidden.
This is often the experience of twice-gifted individuals, also known as twice-exceptional or 2e individuals.
What Does “Twice-Gifted” Mean?
Twice-gifted individuals demonstrate high intellectual ability alongside a co-occurring challenge, such as:
- ADHD
- Autism spectrum differences
- Executive functioning challenges
- Anxiety or sensory sensitivities
- Learning differences
These strengths and challenges exist at the same time, and often mask one another.
A young person may be advanced in their thinking, highly perceptive, and capable of understanding complex ideas, while also struggling to start tasks, stay organized, regulate emotions, or follow through consistently.
From the outside, it can look confusing. The issue is not a lack of motivation or intelligence. Often, it is executive functioning under pressure.
How Twice-Gifted Challenges Can Show Up
Twice-gifted youth often:
- Hold complex ideas but struggle with task initiation or follow-through
- Think deeply but feel emotionally overwhelmed
- Perform inconsistently, leading to frustration or self-doubt
- Burn out trying to meet expectations that do not align with how they are wired
This mismatch between potential and performance can be confusing not only for parents and teachers, but for the young person as well. Over time, it can impact confidence, increase anxiety, and create repeated cycles of shutdown, avoidance, or conflict.
How Keymaker Supports Twice-Gifted Individuals
At Keymaker, we do not try to “fix” giftedness or overlook the challenges. We work to understand the full picture and integrate them.
Our work with twice-gifted youth and families focuses on the following areas:
Comprehensive Executive Functioning Assessments
We identify strengths, stress points, and the places where giftedness and executive functioning challenges collide. This helps families move beyond guesswork and better understand what is really driving the struggle.
Strength-Based Executive Functioning Skills Development
Time management, planning, emotional regulation, flexibility, and follow-through are taught in ways that respect high cognitive ability. Support should meet the individual where they are, without talking down to them or oversimplifying their experience.
Parent & Family Alignment
We help parents recalibrate expectations, reduce power struggles, and support regulation without lowering standards. When families better understand what is happening beneath the surface, they can respond more effectively and with less friction.
School & Provider Collaboration
We align language, accommodations, and strategies across environments so youth are not constantly starting over. Consistency across home, school, and support providers can make a meaningful difference.
Identity-Safe Support
Twice-gifted youth do not need to be toned down, minimized, or misunderstood. They need systems, strategies, and support that allow them to thrive as they are.
What Can Change With the Right Support?
When twice-gifted individuals receive support that honors both their brilliance and their challenges, we often see:
- Increased confidence and self-trust
- Reduced anxiety and emotional shutdown
- More consistent follow-through
- Better alignment between potential and performance
The goal is not perfection. The goal is helping individuals function more effectively, feel more understood, and build systems that support long-term success.
If This Sounds Like Your Child (or You)
Twice-gifted individuals often go unseen because they appear capable on the surface. They may even be praised for being bright, while the underlying struggle is missed.
They are not broken. They are complex, and they require aligned support that reflects that complexity.
Every Keymaker program begins with a Comprehensive Executive Functioning Skills Assessment for the youth or young adult and their support system.
